Yesterday, a pair of co-workers put together a bizarre plan of gluttony for the conference championship games: order 11 pizzas, invite friends, and see who can finish slices from each one. My side still kind of aches. If you’d like to know which places in Portland we ordered from, the photo of the chart should be legible enough to tell where we got the pies from. My personal winner was Escape from New York’s cheese pizza because of the sauce quality — lots of it underneath, and proper spicing. Many of the other pies lacked enough sauce and if they did have it, there was no bite or flavor to them.
We’re thinking tacos for the next gorging.
Other notes:
- a lot of the places have a specialty pizza that is pepperoni + Italian sausage + 2-3 veg than I expected, so comparisons were easier than I was expecting even though we ordered different pies each time to mix it up.
- It’s criminal how many of these places make crusts that don’t support their pizzas at all. The slice should not slide off when I pick it up.
- Again, lack of sauce or spicing in sauce. How many pizza shops fail this test? Way too many.
This is a great idea. I think I’ve been to every one of those places at some point, save for Mellow Mushroom. Glad you got American Dream—it’s definitely not the best pizza in PDX, nor my fave style, but it holds a special place in our household. It was my first meal after Hannah was born (some 30 hours after she was born, so I was hella hungry—it’s across the street from Providence Medical Center), and it’s a place that the girls and I have sat in probably 30 or 40 times. Plus, they always have Ninkasi Tricerahops on tap, and it’s a screaming deal.
God, the American Dream pizza (the “Goddess Athena”) was SO FRUSTRATING. Thicker and more-bread like crust (good,...
