There have been millions of words spilled over the Tim Thomas “scandal”, but very few if any have called Thomas out for being plain rude, which I think is just about the most important aspect of what is a relatively unimportant story.
Switching to today, I spent 10 minutes on twitter just now and I was subjected to several ugly comments in reaction to the news that Kelly Clarkson is singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. And while many people smarter than I can and will ponder what it all means, gazing through the prisms of celebrity worship, feminism, misogyny, online culture, and on and on, I will simply state that typing anything along the lines of “SHE IS FAT!!!” in reference to someone you do not know and who is a person and who by most accounts is a generally good person, is really fucking mean. So don’t do it.

I called Prince Fielder fat on Twitter yesterday. I don’t feel very bad about it at all. As baseball players go, he is fat. As human beings go, he’s still pretty fat. I have the chiseled frame of a Greek God, mind you.
