Ten days later. I’m still thinking about Memorial Day evening in Eugene. I could remind you that one of my life’s regrets is not having seen the White Stripes before the breakup. I could go on about the Hult Center, about why it is both wonderful and dreadful, architecturally. I could give a quick rundown of how surprised I was when Janet Weiss walked onstage at 8:05, and how we soon figured out that we were not going to see Alabama Shakes that night (this upset Stacey more than I—I love those guys, but I was there to see Jack, and btw: Janet Weiss!). I could deconstruct the setlist and line it up against what Jack’s set was two days before at Sasquatch.
But all I really need to say is that the show was really, really fucking loud and so very awesome. He was amazing throughout the two hours he was onstage, playing White Stripes stuff, lots of tracks from his new album, covers… but I most enjoyed and will most remember him first hitting the stage and immediately melting our faces off. SO MUCH LOUD GUITAR.
He is the best. As is Stacey, for surprising me with tickets, and joining me at the show. And I will tell you that even though Jack White might not ever necessarily be her “thing”, she is now a believer.
